Brief of Incident
Major Shaitan Singh commanded C Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment during the historic Battle of Rezang La in the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Facing overwhelming enemy numbers in extreme weather conditions, his company defended a critical position in Ladakh. Throughout the battle, Major Shaitan Singh moved from one defensive post to another under heavy enemy fire, motivating and encouraging his soldiers. His leadership helped the company inflict significant casualties on the attacking forces despite being heavily outnumbered. Even after sustaining serious injuries, he continued directing the defence until he was mortally wounded. His extraordinary leadership and courage became one of the most inspiring stories in Indian military history and earned him the Param Vir Chakra.
